If you haven't seen M. Night Shyamalan's SPLIT yet, or just don't care, be warned that there will be SPOILERS below. After what seemed like far too long, M. Night Shyamalan finally began to emerge from the pit of mediocrity into which he had descended years ago with SPLIT, which told the tale of a man with twenty-three different personalities who kidnaps and imprisons three teenage girls in an isolated underground facility. Starring James McAvoy (X-MEN: APOCALYPSE) and Anya Taylor-Joy (THE WITCH), the film proved to be quite the success story, and, as we've come to associate them with Shyamalan, it wasn't without a few twists and turns.
The biggest of those twists arrived at the very end with the appearance of David Dunn (Bruce Willis), revealing SPLIT to be a stealthy sequel to M. Night Shyamalan's UNBREAKABLE. A sequel was soon announced which would bring back Bruce Willis as David Dunn, Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, James McAvoy as Kevin Wendell Crumb, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke to conclude the trilogy. Titled GLASS, the sequel will find David Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men. Collider got the chance to speak with Jason Blum recently and asked the producer if he would describe GLASS as a superhero movie.
Of course, it’s a kind of superhero movie, for sure. I do consider it that, yeah. It’s very different. I would say it’s not a Marvel movie, but a superhero movie.
The superhero genre has come a long way in the seventeen years since the release of UNBREAKABLE, so I'm curious to witness just how the director plans on spinning this "very different" superhero movie in an age which sees the release of dozens of superhero movies each year. I've long hoped that M. Night Shyamalan would be able to get back a little of that magic which made his first movies so memorable, and I was thrilled that SPLIT finally set the director back on his path. I can only hope he manages stick the landing with GLASS.
GLASS is set for a January 18, 2019 release.
