M3GAN makers think an Annabelle team-up would be more interesting than a Chucky battle

During the build-up to the release of sci-fi horror film M3GAN, the official Twitter accounts for both M3GAN and the killer doll Chucky would trade barbs with each other – which made sense, since M3GAN and Chucky are both set up at Universal. But it doesn’t sound like the makers of M3GAN would have much interest in these Twitter interactions leading to a M3GAN vs. Chucky movie… in fact, the producers would be more interested in seeing a team-up between M3GAN and evil doll Annabelle!

Speaking with Syfy Wire, producer Jason Blum, director Gerard Johnstone, and star Allison Williams all said M3GAN would defeat Chucky in a fight. Blum said, “There’s no question that M3GAN would definitely win. She’s much smarter than Chucky.” Johnstone said, “I have to say M3GAN (would win), obviously, but for the viewers, we would have to make sure it’s not a quick decision. M3GAN would just keep him alive long enough to prove a point.” Williams said, “M3GAN’s got this. It feels so simple to me. M3GAN can just do all of the research there is on Chucky’s weaknesses in a millisecond and figure it out. She has too many resources. It’s not a fair fight.”

On Reddit, the M3GAN account said M3GAN could defeat both Annabelle and Chucky: “Annabelle never moves so I wouldn’t have to really lift a finger against her and Chucky is old so I would go straight for his pacemaker.” Johnstone and Blum were less certain about the outcome of a M3GAN vs. Annabelle battle when talking to Entertainment Weekly. Johnstone said, “Well, I guess because Annabelle’s a demon, maybe she would win. Maybe we should make a movie and find out!” Blum said, “That’s tough, because Annabelle has magic powers, that’s a tough one. I don’t know about that. But if it was Chucky, M3GAN would win.”

But it was during an interview with CinePOP that Blum and fellow producer James Wan (who also happens to be the producer of the Annabelle franchise) stumbled upon the idea of M3GAN and Annabelle teaming up:

BLUM: Annabelle and M3GAN fighting would be cool.

WAN: We talked maybe about fighting each other, maybe the dolls could come together, like the Avengers.

BLUM: That I like. They fight a great evil. A great human evil.

The roadblock on the way to making a M3GAN and Annabelle crossover is that the Annabelle franchise is set up at New Line Cinema. In fact, Wan ended up making M3GAN at Universal because New Line Cinema turned down the project, feeling that their evil doll needs were already covered by the Annabelle series.
