The Matrix co-creator Lilly Wachowski has joined Making a Bridesmaid, an ’80s-inspired horror comedy about a bachelorette weekend that turns into a deadly game. The completed film is heading to the American Film Market for worldwide sales. Wachowski is executive producing the feature through her production company, Anarchists United, which has also joined the project.

Written, directed by, and starring Molly Ratermann, Making a Bridesmaid blends the world of bachelorette parties with true-crime obsession, horror and dark comedy.

The news arrives just days after we reported that Wachowski is executive producing iHunt: Killing Monsters in the Gig Economy, another horror comedy project that combines genre thrills with social commentary. That film, directed by Scott Glosserman (Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon), adapts the supernatural monster-hunting universe created by Olivia Hill and Filamena Young.

What Is Making a Bridesmaid About?

Making a Bridesmaid follows two outcast sisters, played by Ratermann and Emily Kincaid (Hard Miles, Succubus), who arrive at what appears to be a picture-perfect bachelorette weekend. Their expectations of a celebratory getaway quickly collapse when they discover they’ve been thrown into a real-life murder game. The guests must compete for four coveted bridesmaid positions, with their lives on the line. Described as a satirical “sleepover from hell,” the film takes the social pressures of wedding culture and turns them into a deadly competition.

The cast also includes Serra Naiman (Goldilocks and the Two Bears), Wilder Yari (The Lincoln Lawyer), Alex Sgambati (The Walking Dead), Gina Su (Trapped in the Rocky Mountains), Maya Butler (The Offer), April Kelley (Plainclothes), and Cynthia Aileen Strahan (The Offer).

The film was shot on location in Lake Tahoe, California.

Lilly Wachowski Supports Another Unconventional Genre Project

Wachowski’s career spans groundbreaking science fiction, independent filmmaking, and television. She made her feature directorial debut with the neo-noir thriller Bound before co-creating The Matrix with Lana Wachowski. Subsequent credits include The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas, and Jupiter Ascending. She also co-created the Netflix series Sense8 and served as showrunner and executive producer of Work in Progress.

Ratermann provided the following statement: “Lilly has built a career telling bold, unconventional stories that challenge the way we see ourselves and the world around us. That’s something I’ve always admired and tried to bring to my own work. Making a Bridesmaid is a pretty outrageous film on the surface, but underneath is a story that questions the roles women are expected to play and the lengths we’ll go to belong. Having Lilly, who’s spent her career pushing against convention, champion this film is an incredible honor and a dream come true.”

Anarchists United similarly praised Ratermann’s distinctive approach to genre storytelling, highlighting the film’s exploration of identity, social expectations, and the pressure to fit in.

Producers include American Cinema Editors President Sabrina Plisco, 741 Films, and Ratermann’s Little Hand Productions. Executive producers are Justin Gray, Finn Bruce, Michael D. Whitfield, Sonny Marler, Keith Rosmarin, Darren Cogan, and Emily Kincaid.

Between Making a Bridesmaid and iHunt: Killing Monsters in the Gig Economy, Wachowski is backing two projects that use horror and comedy to explore contemporary anxieties. Both offer a different take on genre filmmaking, with Making a Bridesmaid turning the social politics of a wedding weekend into a fight for survival.
