WB confirms Man of Steel will get the 3D and IMAX treatment after all

Despite back and forth news that it would be post-converted to 3D, Warner Bros. has now officially announced that MAN OF STEEL will be released in the format.

The announcement on Facebook states that MAN OF STEEL will be presented in 3D in select theaters, as well as in 2D and IMAX®, so fans of the iconic superhero will be able to experience the much-anticipated movie in their format of choice.

It remains to be seen if “select” theaters means that the release will be a limited one or if they are playing semantics games with the fact that not all theaters show 3D movies. I would find it highly unlikely that they would go through the trouble of a post-conversion to not play it as widely as possible.

Zack Snyder added his own statement: “The film is going to be a visually exciting experience in all formats: 2D, 3D and IMAX. Anticipating how audiences today embrace 3D, we designed and photographed the movie in a way that would allow ‘Man of Steel’ to captivate those movie goers, while respecting fans who prefer a more traditional cinematic experience. We’ve taken great measures to ensure the film and the story come first, and 3D is meant as an enhancement.”

While I will admit that seeing Superman fly in 3D is a cool concept, the post-conversion gives me no hope. Maybe they will film JUSTICE LEAGUE or the inevitable sequel to MAN OF STEEL in 3D so we can enjoy the experience completely.

MAN OF STEEL opens June 14, 2013.
