Variety announced this morning that Canadian distribution company Maple Pictures has picked up all distribution rights to Bruce McDonald’s upcoming horror/thriller PONTYPOOL, which is premiering this week in Toronto.
Since this is the first time I’ve heard of PONTYPOOL, I’m guessing it’s your first time as well, so here’s a quick rundown on what the flick is about: a washed-up small-town morning radio DJ becomes trapped with his crew after getting reports of a rampantly spreading virus.
Sounds a bit like Corbin Bernsen’s DEAD AIR, about a radio crew trapped inside while a zombie epidemic breaks out outside. I’d even be inclined to say that PONTYPOOL is a rip-off of DEAD AIR, except PONTYPOOL is actually based on a novel by Tony Burgess entitled “Pontypool Changes Everything,” which was published about 10 years ago. So I guess DEAD AIR may have been inspired by PONTYPOOL and not the other way around…
The film stars Stephen McHattie, Lisa Houle, and Georgina Reilly. No word on when Maple plans on releasing this badboy, but it will likely depend on how it’s recieved this week at Toronto’s Film Festival. Stick around for more on PONTYPOOL as we hear it!
