Mark Ruffalo may lead HBO’s Parasite series

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

THE HOST and SNOWPIERCER director Bong Joon-ho's black comedy thriller masterpiece PARASITE has just won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Film at this year's Oscars. And now we're hearing that Mark Ruffalo is being eyed to play one of the leads in HBO's upcoming limited series, which is expected to be five or six episodes.

That said, HBO said:

[The limited series] is in the early stages of development, and to speculate on any characters or casting is wildly premature.

HBO's English-language limited series has Bong and Adam McKay (ANCHORMAN, TALLADEGA NIGHTS) crafting the adaptation and executive producing along with Mikey Le, Cho Young Ki, Francis Chung, and Kevin Messick. Jerry Ko is a co-executive producer and Fred Lee will produce.

Bong said:

I had all these key ideas accumulated from when I started writing the script. I just couldn’t include all those ideas in the two-hour running time of the film, so they’re all stored in my iPad and my goal with this limited series is to create a six-hour-long film. When the original housekeeper comes back in the late-night, something happened to her face. Even her husband asked about it, but she never answered. I know why she had bruises on her face. I have a story for that, and aside from that, why does she know the existence of this bunker? What relationship does she have with that architect to know of this bunker? So I have all these hidden stories that I have stored.

Bong Joon Ho brings his work home to Korea in this pitch-black modern fairytale which tells the tale of

The Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist, to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide "indispensable" luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims' newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks.

PARASITE is directed by Bong Joon-ho (THE HOST, SNOWPIERCER) and stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik and Park So-dam. It's rated R for language, some violence, and sexual content and it is NOW AVAILABLE on Blu-ray. BUY IT HERE.
