The Batman, Matt Reeves, sequel

The Batman is reportedly a pre-planned trilogy that already has two spinoffs green-lit for HBO Max but director Matt Reeves has no plans to rush and start production on the sequel.

During a chat with Los Angeles Times en Español, Reeves expressed that he wants to see how audiences perceive his take on Batman and that the movie does not push the idea of being a starting chapter in a long franchise. Here is what he had to say:

“I think the first thing is a very long nap and here’s the thing, my feeling in doing the film was always that I would never treat it as chapter 1. Because chapter 1 assumes that there are more chapters. So what I wanted to do was to make this movie a satisfying experience so that people could experience a new fresh version of a character that the world has loved for over 80 years.”

Despite not wanting to rush into a sequel, Reeves admitted that he has a lot to tell in future films focusing on Robert Pattinson’s Batman and that there are a lot of stories to blend for future installments:

“I think that if we succeed on that front, I know that I have a lot of stories I want to tell, and then we’ll do chapter 2, but not because we didn’t make this one a complete experience. Let’s just see what happens, let’s see the audience watch it. I hope they connect to it and if they do then yes there’s definitely more to do, and I will not be napping for too long!”

The Batman may not get its sequel immediately but it will serve as the starting point for stories being spun out of it in the future. These stories include Gotham P.D., which will focus on a younger version of James Gordon, and a spinoff series featuring Colin Farrell’s Penguin. Both series will be executive produced by Matt Reeves and are being prepped for the HBO Max streaming service.

Per the film’s official synopsis, “It’s not just a call… It’s a warning. From Warner Bros. Pictures comes Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” starring Robert Pattinson in the dual role of Gotham City’s vigilante detective and his alter ego, reclusive billionaire Bruce Wayne. Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies—Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright)—amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens. When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”

The Batman hits screens on March 4, 2022.
