Sorry ladies and gentlemen, you read that right, Matthew McConaughey will not be returning for the sequel to director Steven Soderbergh’s MAGIC MIKE appropriately titled MAGIC MIKE XXL. We haven’t heard much regarding the films casting so it doesn’t come as much of a surprise; the whole idea of a sequel isn’t surprising either considering the original had a budget of $7 million and went on to bring in over $165 million worldwide. The movie is being directed by Gregory Jacobs and will be shot by Peter Andrews (pseudonym used by Steven Soderbergh). MAGIC MIKE XXL looks to be doing things a little different this time around as well.
While the movie still has Channing Tatum, Jacobs told Indiewire that McConaughey would not be returning. We don’t know if it’s due to scheduling (the classic reason) or a creative issue but you would think they would make room for Dallas right? Jacobs gave some insight into how the sequel will be different: “What am I allowed to say? It’s a road trip movie and put it this way, it’s different enough that once you see it you’ll understand why we made a sequel. No one will be accusing us of making the same movie twice.”
So there you have it, tell your mom MAGIC MIKE XXL is going on the road without McConaughey and is still going to make a f*ck ton of money.
