The Incredible True Story

Peter Berg is back at honoring the brave souls who defend our country at great cost. The new dramatic trailer and poster for his new film, The Mosquito Bowl, have now dropped online from Netflix. The movie shows off the parallels of going to war against opponents on both the gridiron and the battlefield of war. The trailer emphasizes the intensity that these men put their bodies and their minds through, hoping to secure a victory. Check it out in the embed above.

The Mosquito Bowl

The film is based on Buzz Bissinger’s acclaimed non-fiction bestseller, The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II. Bissinger and Berg have history, as Bissinger wrote Friday Night Lights, which Berg adapted into the 2004 movie of the same name. They also happen to be cousins, which I didn’t know.

The description reads: “Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, four of America’s top College Football stars set their fame aside to enlist in the Marines. As they prepare for the brutal invasion of Okinawa, they’ll play in a legendary game featuring some of the greatest players in history – a game that, for many, will be the last they ever play.“

The Mosquito Bowl stars Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Galitzine, Ray Nicholson, Tom Francis, Brent Comer, and Dominic Bogart.

“The way Peter Berg wanted to make this movie means we’ve done pretty much everything ourselves with limited use of stunt doubles,” Galitzine told Netflix’s Tudum. “Explosives going off a couple feet from our faces, trees on fire, flames actually catching on us at points, the sounds of war right up close I’ve never experienced this kind of immersion before in my career.”

When Will The Film Be Released?

The Mosquito Bowl will be released in theaters on October 30 and will begin streaming on Netflix on November 25.

The film is Berg’s first project in quite a while. He last directed Spenser Confidential, which was released on Netflix in 2020. That film wasn’t particularly well-liked. Our own Chris Bumbray said it felt more “like a modestly priced TV pilot rather than a full-on feature, and while there’s for sure some potential here, the first film isn’t quite good enough to make anyone seriously clamor for a sequel.” You can check out the rest of his review right here. Hopefully, The Mosquito Bowl fares better.
