Those lucky bastards over at The 213.net had a chance to sit down and chat with entertaining trash director McG on his upcoming project, TERMINATOR SALVATION: THE FUTURE BEGINS. Some may be against McG stepping behind the camera on this one… and all I can really say is, could he possibly do any worse than TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES?
McG let it be known that the film is in full pre-production, and gearing to film once they can polish the script a bit more. Among the many things he discusses in the interview, he talked about what it’s like to take on a franchise that was executed so well by James Cameron – check it:
It was important to me to honor James Cameron’s pictures and I spoke to him for a long time, he’s down in New Zealand doing Avatar, and he was very encouraging saying “Look, I was in the same spot following Ridley Scott on the second Aliens picture – it’s like, what are you doing, it’s Ridley!” And he said, “I wanted to be respectful of the film by Ridley, but I wanna go in a direction where hopefully I can satisfy the hard core fans, but also build upon what’s put before us.” And I would never be so bold as to say that we’re going to be successful, but we’re certainly going to do our best and I think we’re greatly protected by Christian Bale.
Putting it in that context, I’m actually pretty stoked to see what McG is going to do with SALVATION. He also discusses the timeline a bit as well, considering it will likely have to compete with the TV series TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES (which kicks ass, by the way). Basically the film takes place after Judgment Day in the year 2019, so it bypasses the show’s timeline and the movie timelines as well.
The interview is great for making you feel at ease in terms of McG treating the new entry in the series with respect and doing it justice, so if you’re on the fence about him being on board, you should definitely check it out.
