Now you guys should know by now that it’s pretty hit-or-miss when it comes to all these adaptations of young adult novels in our genre. Actually it’s usually just miss… But alas that won’t stop us from reporting on them! Who knows, maybe there’s a gem hidden amongst the trash somewhere?
And hopefully EARTHSEED is that gem! The guys over at The Hollywood Reporter’s Risky Business blog are reporting that Paramount have tapped Melissa Rosenberg with the task of penning an adaptation of the 1983 young adult sci-fi novel EARTHSEED, which comes from author Pamela Sargent. What’s this thing about? Check it:
Earthseed takes place in a future where humans launch a project called Ship to carry Earth DNA into space to find a new planet on which to settle. During its flight, a group of newly grown teenagers born without traditional parents are provided a simulated Earth environment, Hollow, to test their ability to survive. As some of the kids splinter off, tensions grow between the groups and major revelations ensue as fighting erupts.
Rosenberg will also be producing the flick through her banner Tall Girl Prods, which marks the production company’s debut film. With sequels to the original novel coming out as recent as 2007 and 2010 the plan is to make EARTHSEED into a franchise, but that of course all depends on this first film’s success. Scope out a bit of what Rosenberg had to say regarding the novel:
“It really talks about the debate of nature vs. nurture, what is innately human and what can be bred in or out of someone. There’s a Lord of the Flies element to it. It involves a young woman who starts off as someone who is content with playing by the rules and being a “good girl,’ and then has to realize that the rules are malleable and that she has to step forward as a leader. It’s really about coming into one’s own power and embracing one’s own strength and individuality.”
