I haven't seen HEREDITARY writer/director Ari Aster's new film MIDSOMMAR, but I intend to catch up with it once it hits home video… And it looks like if I want to watch the director's cut, I would have to buy the movie through iTunes.

The initial theatrical cut of MIDSOMMAR runs 147 minutes, but Aster has since assembled a 171 minute cut that played at New York's Scary Movies film festival and received a limited theatrical release last weekend. A24 will be giving the theatrical cut a Digital and On Demand release on September 24th, with Lionsgate following that up with a DVD, Digital, and Blu-ray release on October 8th. The film is available for pre-order on Amazon Prime and iTunes, and our friends over at Bloody Disgusting have been informed that the iTunes page reveals:

Your purchase of Midsommar comes with Ari Aster's extended and unrated Director's Cut, exclusive to AppleTV. Plus, go behind the scenes with the cast and crew of MIDSOMMAR in an exclusive featurette, and watch the creation of Hälsingland in time-lapse footage of the elaborate and meticulous set construction.

Starring Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor, MIDSOMMAR delves into "Scandinavian folk horror" to tell an "apocalyptic breakup" story that has the following synopsis:

Dani and Christian are a young American couple with a relationship on the brink of falling apart. But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip to a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village. What begins as a carefree summer holiday in a land of eternal sunlight takes a sinister turn when the insular villagers invite their guests to partake in festivities that render the pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving and viscerally disturbing.

Will Poulter, Vilhem Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, Ellora Torchia, and Archie Madekwe are also in the cast.

I don't tend to use iTunes for anything, so I'm not enthusiastic about having to get MIDSOMMAR through it just to see the cut that's 24 minutes longer.
