It’s been quite some time since we’ve heard anything from the sequel to Gareth Edwards’ MONSTERS, a Jay Basu-penned script titled MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT (check out our last report on it HERE). Screen Daily has learned that the Tom Green-helmed flick has begun production in Jordan, with five weeks scheduled there followed by one week of filming in Detroit. The film, set “some years after” Edwards’ cult hit original, has the following synopsis:

Seven years on from the events of Monsters, and the ‘Infected Zones’ have spread worldwide. Humans have been knocked off the top of the food chain, with disparate communities struggling for survival. American soldiers are being sent abroad to protect US interests from the Monsters, but the war is far from being won.

Noah, a haunted soldier with several tours under his belt, is sent on a mission: an American soldier has gone rogue deep in the Infected Zone, and Noah must reach him and take him out. But when Noah’s unit and transport are destroyed, he finds himself with only a young and inexperienced cadet for company – the brother of the man Noah has been sent to kill.

The two soldiers must go on a life-altering journey through the dark heart of monster territory, accompanied by a young local woman to guide them. By the time the three of them reach their goal, they will have been forced to confront the fear that the true monsters on the planet may not be alien after all.

Screen Daily is also reporting that Johnny Harris, Sam Keeley and Joe Dempsie have joined the cast of MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT. Gareth Edwards is onboard to executive produce.

Producer Allan Niblo of Vertigo Distribution, who is handling the films release in the UK, said:

Monsters: Dark Continent is a sci-fi action film that remains true to the artistry and intelligence of its prequel Monsters as well as providing the excitement, thrills and set pieces of a genre film. We’re very excited to see Tom Green’s vision unfold”.

As are we! We’ll keep you updated on news regarding MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT as it stomps in.
