I was randomly blessed over the weekend to score a last-minute ticket to a horror show in Jersey and come face to face with our genre’s resident reigning queen of scream, Tiffany Shepis! That’s my hand on her shoulder in the pic above (I cropped myself out on purpose)! And just in case any of you had the slightest iota of doubt, I can happily confirm that she really is as AWESOME in person as everyone claims!
Coincidentally, I now have some Tiffany Shepis update info on her forthcoming directorial effort THE DEVIL’S PIES (the blood-splattering, creature/babe-fest I last told you about here). Regarding her “virginal” role behind the camera and how she handled her actors, Ms. Shepis told Fango: “It was really funny, because it kind of came out of nowhere. I’ve never really had the directing bug; I’ve produced a bunch of stuff, acted, and you have to pick up something along the way, so I thought, ‘Maybe I should try it.’ These kids are passionate about what they’re doing, but yet they’re just so green that they may just not know how to go about it. You wanna help them out as much as you can, so I was going, ‘Maybe if you shoot them differently, that will save you time…’ You try not to be a jerk and take over, but I figure it’s kind of my duty to say, ‘Hey, I’ve seen this kind of stuff in my work before, and why don’t you try it like this?’ ”
Sounds like this girl’s learned her shite! PIES is already shaping up to be one kick-ass horror/comedic ride. Tiff has even scored artist Tim Seeley (HACK/SLASH) to help create the feature’s crazy creatures. “The stuff that Tim has been creating is just off the wall,” Shepis says. “Think in the vein of SPACEBALLS…CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON meets the multitentacled monster from THE MIST…crazy crossbreeds of monsters.”
