More teen vamps?

No. I’m not talking about the already announced TWILIGHT sequels. I’m talking about something potentially worse than TWILIGHT. I know the question bouncing around in your head right now: What can be worse than TWILIGHT? Well let me put it to you this way; TWILIGHT meets HARRY POTTER.

Check and mate. Ouch. Just putting that out there hurts… but alas that’s what it seems this new project is leaning towards. I’m talking about the HOUSE OF NIGHT series of novels, ranging from the first title MARKED to the recently released fourth installment UNTAMED. Apparently there’s set to be 9 entries in the series.

Variety are reporting that producers Michael Birnbaum and Jeremiah Chechik have just scored the rights to the series, using cash from their own pockets. All the novels have been or will be penned by P.C. and Kristin Cast. Birnbaum had the following to add:

“P.C. and Kristin Cast created a thrilling world that juxtaposes teen drama with supernatural suspense, using the transition from human to vampire as a metaphor for the transition from adolescence to adulthood.”

This deal is obviously to capitalize on the undeniable success of TWILIGHT. Here’s the description Variety gives for the HOUSE OF NIGHT series: In the series, “vampyres” are accepted in society; they possess a genetic anomaly that manifests itself in some people at puberty. Vampyres are “marked” and sent to the House of Night, a school that offers training necessary to become an adult vampyre. Protag is Zoey Redbird, whose ordinary life is thrown into disarray when she becomes a vampyre and must change schools and enter a brand new world.

Does that not sound exactly like TWILIGHT meets HARRY POTTER? And if that is in fact the case… what horrors might we be in for? And I’m not talking about the good kind of horrors. One positive thing about this is that it doesn’t seem like HOUSE OF NIGHT’s fanbase is anywhere near the insanity of TWILIGHT’s. Hopefully HOUSE OF NIGHT swerves in a different direction… but I find that highly unlikely. Keep it here for updates.
