Rumor: Mortal Kombat developers working on a Marvel title?

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Obviously, take this all with a HUGE grain of salt for now, but there have been recent rumors circulating that NetherRealm Studios – the developer behind the massively popular fighting game franchises Mortal Kombat and DC's Injustice – are developing a fucking Marvel game of all things! It orginated from leaker Daniel Richtman (who has a really good track record), but what really fanned the flames is this recent incendiary tweet from Ed Boon, head of the studio (and co-creator of the original Mortal Kombat game):

Now, this is obviously a reference to the fact that Boon worked on Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe as well as the two Injustice fighting game titles for DC Comics, and it seems he's also directly referencing the rumor about his studio currently working with Marvel. Now, to be clear, that isn't a confirmation by any stretch of the imagination. Boon is known to troll fans with false promises (though his constant trolling about adding fan favorite Mileena to Mortal Kombat 11 turned out to be true, so you can never be too sure with him).

Again, these are all rumors for now. But with Marvel displeased with the most recent Marvel vs. Capcom entry, there's a possiblity they shopped around for a new studio to take on a new fighting game based on their comic universe, and NetherRealm would seem a perfect fit as they have already had success with a superhero fighting game franchise. Furthermore rumors state that it is in fact a DC vs. Marvel fighting game, which…if true…would be fucking rad. And while licensing makes that possiblity difficult, crossovers between the two rivals have happened before, most famously in 1996's DC vs. Marvel series, as well as a JLA/Avengers crossover in 2003.

But what do you guys think? Would you like to see the Mortal Kombat developers take on the Marvel Universe? Either way, sound off below!
