Mortal Kombat: new image shows Shang Tsung and Raiden facing off!

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Anticipation for the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot has definitely hit an all-time high – and ahead of the film's impending release – a new image from the film has come down to Earthrealm from Total Film (via Games Radar) to whet our growing appetite! It shows God of Thunder and protector of Earthrealm, Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), facing off against the evil sorcerer villain Shang Tsung (Chris Han) – possibly ready to throw hands at each other!

In the same article, director Simon McQuoid talked a bit more about the film, stating:

There’s a lot of fighting in the film…Some fights are big, some are small, but my main goal was to make the fights mean something. I wanted the fights to look and feel like they didn’t just sort of pop out of the story and then come back in…I didn’t want anything generic. I didn’t want anything that you could see in any action movie. The stunt team on this were just amazing, and they designed some pretty fucking incredible things.

It’s unapologetically brutal…We spent a lot of time talking about blood and what it looks like, but we just wanted to do it in a smart way. We have to make it mean something and we have to make you care. When we need to push it to 10 we definitely pushed it to 10, so there was no one shying away from that. And there’s one moment I saw today that had me leaping for joy. It’s like Christmas morning every day in the editing suite at the moment – I go in and the effects company have revved everything up… I just can't wait for you all to see it.

And here's the official synopsis:

A washed-up mixed martial arts fighter named Cole Young is unaware of his hidden lineage or why he is being hunted down by Sub-Zero of the Lin-Kuei clan of assassins. Concerned for the safety of his family, he seeks out a clique of fighters that were chosen to defend Earthrealm in a high-stakes battle against the forces of Outworld.

Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat will get over here to select theaters and HBO Max April 16th!

So what do you guys think? Fans of the game or the original 1995 film? If so, looking forward to the R-rated reboot? Either way, sound off below!
