Six months ago, David Fincher departed Sony’s biopic on Steve Jobs amidst creative differences, one of which was regarding his desire to cast Christian Bale in the title role. The Aaron Sorkin scripted movie based on Jobs’ authorized biography would have been an instant Oscar contender and was due to go against the Ashton Kutcher film JOBS. Now, Fincher has departed and Danny Boyle is slated to direct and it looks like he may get the star Fincher wanted.
The Hollywood Reporter says talks are building as Christian Bale‘s negotiations to star in Fox’s THE DEEP BLUE GOODBYE have fallen apart. Sources claim that Fox wanted Bale’s contract for the Travis McGee mystery film to include obligations for potential sequels, something Bale is not looking to be locked into a long contract after completing THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy.
Bale would replace Boyle’s prior star, Leonardo DiCaprio, who departed the film as star and producer. While this is not a slam dunk casting move, it does seem to be a perfect fit. Bale is a chameleon and can take on any role and would definitely bring more than Kutcher did to the role. Plus, Sorkin’s screenplay (based on the Walter Isaacson book) would not be a candy-coated portrait of the Apple visionary.
Bale is a very in demand actor and the potential to play a real life character for a film that has no chance of a sequel may be exactly what he is looking for. If things work out, expect this to be a major awards contender when it is released.
