Confirmed: Colin Farrell will play Penguin in Matt Reeves’ The Batman

Director Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN has certainly racked up an impressive cast. Robert Pattinson will be donning the cape and cowl to star as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Zoe Kravitz is set to play Selina Kyle/Catwoman, and actor Jeffrey Wright will get his commissioner on as James Gordon. In addition, Paul Dano will take on the role of master questioner Edward Nygma/Riddler and LORD OF THE RINGS alum Andy Serkis will be feeding Master Bruce champagne and intel as Alfred Pennyworth. Man if they threw in Jeff Goldblum as Scarecrow this movie might have too much awesomeness to bear.

Another big name circling a major role was FANTASTIC BEASTS and THE GENTLEMEN actor Colin Farrell. JoBlo reported back in November that the True Detective star was in talks to play Batman villain Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin. Originally actor Jonah Hill was being eyed for the umbrella touting bird lover but those talks eventually fell apart. Well it appears as if "talks" have solidified into "confirmation" as both Matt Reeves and set pictures indicate.

Coy as ever, Matt Reeves took to Twitter yesterday to seemingly confirm Colin Farrell's involvement posting a Gif of the actor shrugging from IN BRUGES:

Now while that tweet in and of itself isn't a rock firm confirmation, further on set pictures of Farrell offer proof. Although THE BATMAN isn't due out until June of next year, filming has already gotten underway in London, England. Several areas have been cordoned off to film scenes and one lucky observer at work by the name of Wade Gravett got the chance to snap a few photos and catch Colin Farrell in action. Check it out:

Albeit a little difficult to see, one of the pictures in question does appear to be Colin Farrell. Although he is brandishing an umbrella, the rest of his appearance is decidedly un-Penguin-like. Farrell does not appear to have packed on any pounds for the role (Penguin is quite the portly fellow) and he is not sporting his signature monocle. In addition, Farrell's Penguin rather than being bald, is showcasing some flowing silvery hair. I don't know about you guys but these changes don't bother me in the least. As long as Farrell delivers a dynamic performance with the spirit of Penguin I'll be satisfied.

As a lifelong Batman fan I can't overstate how pumped I am for this movie. The cast is just phenomenal and Matt Reeves is a brilliant writer and director. With Catwoman, the Riddler, the Penguin, and Carmine Falcone all set to make appearances in THE BATMAN, it looks like Reeves has quite the Rogue's Gallery in store for Bruce Wayne. It will be interesting to see how they factor into Reeves story which is said to be a much more noir driven film showcasing Batman's detective skills. Hopefully all the aforementioned characters get their just due.

THE BATMAN starring Robert Pattinson, Paul Dano, Zoe Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, and Jeffrey Wright batarangs its way into theaters June 25, 2021.
