Kamala Khan will be played by Iman Vellani in Ms. Marvel Disney+ series

Kamala Khan, Disney+, Ms Marvel

At long last, we finally know who is playing my favorite superhero in the Marvel Universe! It's been reported by Deadline that Marvel has tapped newcomer Iman Vellani to star in its Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. Vellani will step into the heroic role of Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, for the upcoming series, which is set to be helmed by directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Meera Menon.

Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, burst onto the comic book scene in 2014 courtesy of Marvel editor Sana Amanat, acclaimed writer G. Willow Wilson, and artist Adrian Alphona (who in the past launched The Runaways with writer Brian K. Vaughan). She is a Pakinstani-American teenager who is also part-Inhuman and hails from Jersey City. Able to change her size and heal from just about any battle wound, Kamala has been hailed as "Marvel's newest Spider-Man," with regard to the impact she's had on young readers.

In addition to her mainline comic book series – The Magnificent Ms. Marvel – making a return to shelves earlier this month, Kamala stands at the center of Marvel's Avengers, the AAA video game from developer Crystal Dynamics and publisher Square Enix. In the game, it's Kamala who reunites the Avengers after the tragic events of A-Day, also known as the day that faith in superheroes was lost among those they've sworn to protect. The response to Kamala's part in the game was overwhelmingly positive, with many players tweeting that they can't wait to learn more about her when the Disney+ series arrives sometime down the line.

Despite being a fresh face on the Hollywood scene, Vellani was recognized at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival by way of the Next Wave Committee which was tasked with adding a special tag to films — already programmed into other categories — which they believed would resonate with their peers. By the way, I wasn't being cute when I stated that Ms. Marvel is my favorite superhero in the Marvel Universe. Hurl daggers at me in the comments section all you like, it won't do a thing to change my mind. In the past, I've always waffled on whether characters like Spider-Man or Ben Grimm are my favorite Marvel characters, but then Kamala arrived and my mind was quickly made up. Maybe it's because she's from Jersey City, or that I was on the ground floor when she made her debut and have watched her evolve over the past several years, but I find her to be an inspiration. Plus, her powers are incredibly cool. According to G. Willow Wilson, Kamala borrows her "embiggening" powers from space and time itself. She literally warps reality and uses that energy to bend, grow, and shrink around her enemies. I happen to think that's very cool, and I can't wait to see those powers displayed on the big and small screen. Let's go!
