While in the midst of filming THE BURNT ORANGE HERESY for director Giuseppe Capotondi, AMERICAN HANGMAN and THE HUNGER GAMES franchise actor Donald Sutherland has joined the cast of of HBO's upcoming limited series THE UNDOING. Upon boarding the project, Sutherland will star alongside Nicole Kidman (EYES WIDE SHUT, THE OTHERS) and Hugh Grant (LOVE ACTUALLY, ABOUT A BOY) as the father of Kidman's character in the series.

Based on Jean Hanff Korelitz's novel You Should Have Known, THE UNDOING centers on Grace Sachs (Kidman), who is living the only life she ever wanted for herself. She’s a successful therapist, has a devoted husband (Grant) and young son who attends an elite private school in New York City. Overnight a chasm opens in her life: a violent death, a missing husband, and, in the place of a man Grace thought she knew, only a chain of terrible revelations. Left behind in the wake of a spreading and very public disaster, and horrified by the ways in which she has failed to heed her own advice, Grace must dismantle one life and create another for her child and herself.

As I'd mentioned earlier, Sutherland will play Franklin Renner, a retired financier and devoted grandfather who's job it becomes to protect his family once their troubles bubble to the surface. The limited series will be written by David E. Kelly, who is also set to executive produce through his David E. Kelly Prods. banner while also acting as the program's showrunner. Directing the six-episode series is Susanne Bier (IN A BETTER WORLD, LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED). Kidman is also lined up to executive produce with Per Saari via Blossom Films as part of a partnership with Bruana Papandrea courtesy of the Made Up Stories label.

Earlier today, we dropped an exclusive trailer for AMERICAN HANGMAN, which stars Donald Sutherland as a judge who is taken prisoner and forced to defend himself in a makeshift criminal trial superseded by a madman (Vincent Kartheiser) looking for revenge. You can check it out for yourself by watching the trailer above, and be sure to let us know if you're interested in THE UNDOING by leaving a comment below.
