Game of Thrones Nikolaj Coster-Waldau joins Tom Cruise for Oblivion

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Director Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi actioner OBLIVION has added yet another cast member, this time in the form of Nikolaj Coster-Walda (Jaimie Lannister in HBO’s GAME OF THRONES) as Sykes, a battle-hardened, physically imposing, intelligent and extremely athletic military technology and weapons expert.

With filming set to begin next month in Louisiana the cast has really come together and I’m really beginning to look forward to this.  Good sci-fi is hard to come by so I’ll always champion something that looks worthy and OBLIVION seems to be lining up a hell of a cast and crew.  I really enjoyed TRON: LEGACY, and although it was by no means a classic in my opinion, it made me take notice of Kosinski’s talent, especially since it was his first film.  That’s a a hell of a first entry out the gate.

Based on Kosinski’s own graphic novel, the picture is set in a future where the Earth surface has been rendered uninhabitable, with most humans living above the clouds. Back on earth, those who remain have to deal with brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when a surface drone repairman (Cruise) discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows.

The images in circulation (shown on this page) look pretty sweet to me and I’m interested to see the actual graphic novel.  With Kosinski helming his own material (albeit with a number of screenwriters helping with the adaptation) it’ll be interesting to see how this translates.  This is a project I’ll be watching very closely and look forward to seeing its progress to the big screen.
