Several months ago it was revealed that a half-hour animated prequel to the original 1984 GREMLINS movie was in development from Amblin Television and Warner Bros. Animation for WarnerMedia's upcoming streaming service, and now it's been made official as WarnerMedia has confirmed the news.

WarnerMedia has given Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai a 10-episode series order as well as revealed a little more information about the project. The prequel will be set in 1920s Shanghai and tell the tale of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (the elderly shop-keeper from the two live-action movies) met the young Mogwai named Gizmo. "Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins." Tze Chun (Gotham) will write the series as well as serve as executive-producer.

The as-yet-untitled streaming service doesn't have a launch date just yet, but one of the biggest projects for the service will be Dune: The Sisterhood, a live-action series which will serve as a companion to Denis Villeneuve's upcoming DUNE film.
