Have we learned nothing? Clash of the Titans 2 to be converted to 3D

CLASH OF THE TITANS is widely sourced as launching the backlash against the modern era of 3D. The 3D post-conversion was so poorly done even James Cameron couldn’t help but bash it. But despite the misgivings audiences had about the original film, Warner Bros. looks set to repeat history and use the conversion process again for the upcoming CLASH sequel, WRATH OF THE TITANS.

Jonathan Liebesman, who will be directing the sequel, explains the move to Cinematical. “I think what you have to remember is the first film was neither shot nor edited with 3D in mind. It was shot as a 2D movie and edited as a 2D film, and they decided to convert it with six or seven weeks to go until release, which is insane; the technology was not there. That’s why we’re conceiving it from the start, from the ground up, in 3D, editing in 3D for 3D.”

Guess what? I heard that same line of nonsense about the GREEN HORNET convert and it’s not like the 3D effects in that film were any better. That was as needless a 3D conversion as you’ll ever find.

So why not go the DRIVE ANGRY route and shoot the film in 3D? Liebesman says, “I just feel like I have to shoot on film; I don’t know, it just has that texture.” And to his credit, Liebesman says he didn’t want to convert the film to 3D but Warner Bros. forced his hand and was able to convince him by showing him how far conversions have come. (So far that the same studio canceled a planned conversion of HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS because it looked like crap.)

What do you think? Do you think they can improve the 3D look for the sequel or is this already putting a bad taste in your mouth?
