For many of us, our first introduction to Australian actor Joel Edgerton were his appearances as Owen Lars, Luke Skywalker's uncle, in STAR WARS: EPISODE II – ATTACK OF THE CLONES and STAR WARS: EPISODE III – REVENGE OF THE SITH. Since those days, Edgerton has had memorable roles in WARRIOR, THE THING, ZERO DARK THIRTY, THE GREAT GATSBY, EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS, THE GIFT, BLACK MASS, LOVING, IT COMES AT NIGHT, BRIGHT, RED SPARROW, BOY ERASED, and more, but once you're a part of the STAR WARS franchise, there's no escaping it.

Although it's been nearly fifteen years since Joel Edgerton last played the role of Owen Lars, it's still a frequent topic of discussion in interviews. While speaking on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, Edgerton was asked whether or not he might be reprising the role for the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series which is being developed for the Disney+ streaming service. "There is a very real possibility," Edgerton responded, before adding that "there’s potentially an assassin on a rooftop just outside the window if I say the wrong thing." Those pesky Disney hit-men ruin everything. Edgerton went on to say that although there had been rumours of an Obi-Wan project for years, he never thought that there was a possibility that he would return to the franchise, but that all changed when Disney took over.

You know, back in the day George [Lucas] said that there would only be a certain amount of movies and that was it, but, when Disney took it over and started kind of really, really getting back to the old juice, you know, the aesthetic of the first three films, you're like, 'ah, it's a possibility.' And then once you started to hear about breakaway standalone things…so yeah.

When asked whether or not he had spoken with Ewan McGregor recently, Edgerton joked, "Ewan who?" Clearly still looking over his shoulder for those Disney snipers. As the Disney+ series is reportedly set to take place eight years after the events of REVENGE OF THE SITH, there's definitely room for Owen Lars to figure into the story, which would certainly be a good thing in my book, particularly as Joel Edgerton has developed into one of my favourite underrated actors. Ewan McGregor is obviously set to play the leading role in the series, which is set to be helmed by Deborah Chow, who has directed several episodes of The Mandalorian.

What do you folks think? Would you like to see Joel Edgerton back as the charred skeleton known as Owen Lars?
