New Star Trek comics will act of a prequel of sorts to the next movie

STAR TREK 2 doesn’t begin filming until February but if you’re a die-hard Trekkie, there’s a way for you to get your fix a little early. IDW Publishing is relaunching their “Star Trek” comic book line with a new series overseen by TREK co-writer Roberto Orci and the books are expected to serve as a prequel to the upcoming film sequel.

Said comic writer Mike Johnson, “As we get closer to the next movie, the stories will begin to foreshadow the events of the movie, such as possibly introducing new characters we will see onscreen.”

In his capacity as Creative Director of the new comic line, Orci met with Johnson and other staff writers and discussed the major beats of the upcoming sequel (note to self: visit Mike Johnson with a rag soaked in sodium pentathol). This included deciding what storylines to avoid so as not to conflict with the film’s script and what characters and events can be teased in the comics.

“We can lay in subtle clues to what’s coming up,” says Johnson, “so that once you see the new movie you can go back and see how it evolved in the comics.”

There have been a lot of rumors regarding plots and characters for STAR TREK 2, most notably the return of Khan (KHAAAAN!!!). I’m not much of a Trekkie so I can’t speak to eloquently about the universe, but what do you think could (and should) be involved?
