When the topic of anime gets brought up, the first film people immediately blurt out is GHOST IN THE SHELL. If you’re a fan of the genre, it’s pretty much required viewing. A live action version of the material has been trying to get off the ground for some time now. The last we even reported on it was back in 2009 when Dreamworks announced that they were bringing it to big screens in 3D.
Now it seems that the studio has finally made a deal with Rupert Sanders (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN) to helm the adaptation. Masamune Shirow’s creation started as a manga in 1989 then went on to produce several animated films, a television series, and a video game. It’s fair to say that the story is immensely popular amongst its fans.
The story centers on,
the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.
There’s a new version of the script from William Wheeler. You may or may not remember his script work from 2006s THE HOAX starring Richard Gere. Definitely not much to go on in terms of how it might turn out.
My next thought goes to who they are thinking might be good for the leading role of Motoko Kusanagi. Any suggestions?
