So the supernatural is still marketable, right? And superheros are a hit these days (GREEN LANTERN notwithstanding), so why not combine them to make something SUPER marketable! According to Deadline, SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH “is being recast as a superhero. The live action film will be an origin story in the vein of Spider-Man, about a young girl coming to terms with her remarkable powers.”

What? Not “the live action film will be an origin story in the vein of Batman Begins/The Dark Knight, about a young girl coming to terms with how to live in a dark and gritty world without rules for witches?” Then again, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is very obviously taking cues from THE DARK KNIGHT, so maybe in a roundabout way that’s what SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH is also doing.  “While the tone of the movie will be edgier, they are keeping her talking black cat Salem, who here is a transformed prince creating unique love stories for Sabrina.”

Originally created by Archie Comics in the 60s, the edgy update of SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH’s will be written by Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari (Zac Efron’s upcoming DIE IN A GUNFIGHT), produced by the folks behind REAL STEEL (as well as CEO of Archie Comics Jon Goldwater), and possibly directed by Mark Waters (THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES, MEAN GIRLS).  It has also been mentioned that, due to the brand’s popularity, the studio could use this as the chance to “discover an actress for the Sabrina role.”

And here is Melissa Joan Hart, ready to put a spell on you:
