Shazam! 2 director working on script but expects filming to be delayed

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Director David F. Sandberg is currently working on the script for SHAZAM! 2, the follow-up to one of the best reviewed films of the DCEU. The first film's success made a sequel a no-brainer and while Sandberg says the plan was to begin shooting the sequel this year, the current state of the world will likely delay the start of production.

In an interview with "ComicBook.com", Sandberg seemed hopeful to start shooting mid-summer but the COVID-19 pandemic may put a stop to those plans:

"Well, we'll see how long this goes, because I mean, we were going to start shooting this year. But, I mean, who knows how long this will go on? I mean, it feels like every movie gets delayed now, so we'll see what happens with Shazam!. But so far, I've been working on the script. We can still do that, so that's being done and then, yeah, we'll just see in a couple of months how it looks, you know?"

It is looking like a mid-summer start is unrealistic at this point with no sign of any productions getting back to work anytime soon due to the coronavirus pandemic. It's possible that they can get back to work later in 2020 but any earlier than that doesn't seem feasible. The film has a planned spring 2022 release so there is plenty of time for the SHAZAM! sequel to make that date without much of a problem.

There is no word on who the villain of the film will be although Mister Mind was teased in a post-credits scene at the end of the first movie. We do know that Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam won't be going toe-to-toe with Shazam! just yet because he'll be introduced in his own solo movie first. That film was also supposed to start shooting this summer but its production is also most likely delayed

Grossing $365 million worldwide, SHAZAM! wasn't an out of this world box office hit in the realm of comic book films but given its $100 million budget and the fact that he's not a household name for casual moviegoers, it was a good start that could find even more success in a future film. The first movie starred Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody & Djimon Hounsou. Zachary Levin & Asher Angel, who plays the young Billy Batson (Shazam!), are expected to return for the sequel.

Are YOU looking forward to a sequel to SHAZAM!?
