Star Trek goes black ops as Michelle Yeoh set to lead Section 31 series

SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery's first season. Although it seems like STAR TREK's future on the big-screen isn't looking quite so bright at the moment, the franchises' television empire has grown more and more each day. CBS All Access announced today that they've put a new Star Trek series into development which will star Michelle Yeoh, who will be reprising her Star Trek: Discovery role of Philippa Georgiou.

There aren't many details about the long-rumoured spin-off series just yet, other than it will revolve around Section 31, a shadowy organization within the Federation of which Georgiou is a member. The Philippa Georgiou we were introduced to in the beginning of Star Trek: Discovery is not the Philippa Georgiou we will be following in the new series, as that incarnation of Georgiou was killed by Klingons. Instead, we will follow the Mirror Universe version of Georgiou, the former Emperor of the Terran Empire who escaped into our universe near the end of Discovery's first season. The Section 31 series will be written by and Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt., and in a statement, franchise producer Alex Kurtzman said:

Michelle has shattered ceilings, broken boundaries, and astonished us with her grace and gravitas for decades. As a human, I adore her. As an actor, I revere her. Erika and Boey are remarkable, exciting writers who bring a fresh perspective to the world of ‘Star Trek,’ and we’re all thrilled to explore the next wild chapter in the life of Captain Philippa Georgiou.

Michelle Yeoh added, "I’m so excited to continue telling these rich ‘Star Trek’ stories. Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!'" In addition to the new Michelle Yeoh series, there's a Jean-Luc Picard series which will find Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role, Star Trek: Lower Decks, an animated comedy from Mick McHahan (Rick and Morty), a new set of Star Trek: Short Treks, as well as the second season of Star Trek: Discovery which is due to debut on January 17th.
