The classic PC game Myst set to become a fantasy TV series

Legendary TV and Digital Media are set to turn Myst, one of the most popular computer games of all time, into a TV series. The show will also bring about a companion video game to go along with it. Released in 1993, Myst was a first-person game where users would explore an island as an unnamed player known as the Stranger. I have never played the game myself which is probably why I have a hard time imagining this as a TV show. The game had no instructions, dialogue or even death.

Here’s the official synopsis for Myst the game:

Alone on a mysterious island, you set out to explore its grandeur and mystery. Here, a chilling tale of intrigue and injustice, defying all boundaries of space and time, is being told. Summon your wits and imagination about you. Every scrap of paper and ambient sound may provide the vital clues that allow hidden secrets to unravel before you. Each discovery you make and each puzzle you solve will lead you one step closer to reversing a wrong that has gone unchecked for ages.

Legendary inked a deal with Cyan Worlds to develop the show; Cyan said this opportunity will finally give the company the chance to “express in a visual linear medium the rich story that the Myst franchise is dripping with.”

They went on to explain:

“Cyan’s goal in working with Legendary is not just to create a compelling TV drama but to develop a true transmedia product that will include a companion video game that extends the story across both media. Seventy percent of tablet owners use their device while watching TV at least several times a week.  Cyan sees the potential to push the boundaries of interactive storytelling to a new level.”

There was potential for a movie based on the game back in 2010 when producers Hunt Lowry and Mark Johnson acquired the rights to Myst. That seemed to run its course as nothing has been reported on that front since.
