The official title for Johnson & Statham’s Fast spin-off has been revealed

Ladies and gentlemen, please go ahead and start your engines, because Universal Pictures has finally revealed the official title of the upcoming Fast & Furious spin-off starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham! Up until this point in time, the highly-anticipated action film had been referred to as HOBBS & SHAW, but thanks to a recent report by Collider, we've learned that the full title for the movie is … wait for it … I said wait for it … FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW.

While the studio has remained tight-lipped about the plot of the highly-anticipated spin-off, we do know that the upcoming film will center on fan favorite characters US Diplomatic Security Agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Staham), who will form an unlikely alliance for a new fule-injected and action-packed adventure. Set to pour sugar in the muscle-bound duo's collective gas tank (metaphorically speaking) is THE DARK TOWER and LUTHER actor Idris Elba. According to the film's casting call, Elba will approach the starting line as Brixton, an undefeated antagonist of the Fast & Furious filmscape. Also set to rev their engines for FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW are Vanessa Kirby (THE CROWN, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT), Eiza González (BABY DRIVER, ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL), and Eddie Marsan (21 GRAMS, THE WORLD'S END). Meanwhile, DEADPOOL 2 and ATOMIC BLONDE helmer David Leitch will direct from a script penned by Fast franchise scribe Chris Morgan.

Recently, Jason Statham told Entertainment Weekly that the film will deliver plenty of humor alongside its high-octane action beats:

"The whole thing has been such a laugh. There’s so many great elements to this that has made it become what it has. The director I’ve known for years from the days that I was trying to get into movies. And Dwayne and I never seem to get up to full speed when we’re doing the Fast movies. We get little tastes of some of the fun that we can generate together. Now we really get to take all the brakes off and go to town with it… We’re having a ball. It’s definitely become much funnier than we intended for it to be, I think. It’s just two guys screwing around, making the most of it, and we’re getting some good stuff. But that will be determined by the audience, I’m sure, whether it’s good or bad [laughs]. But we feel like we’re doing something great and we’re enjoying it," said Statham.

This is great news for those who enjoyed the "oil and water" chemistry of Hobbs and Shaw in previous installments of the franchise. I suspect that there will be plenty of sniping as the two characters struggle to work together toward better ends, and I say bring it on!
