Wonder Woman 1984 has a third weekend on top of the box office

Diana is still holding on…

For its third weekend in theaters (the few that remain open anyway), the PG-13 superhero sequel WONDER WOMAN 1984 stayed on top of the box office with an estimated $3 million.

The second solo adventure for Diana of Themyscira now has a domestic total of $32.6 million since it first arrived on screens (and via streaming) on Christmas Day. It has roped in a worldwide total of $131.4 million.

The $200 million movie from director Patty Jenkins will be available for home viewing through the HBO Max application for two more weeks, after which the only option will be to see it theatrically. But with only 40% of all theaters still open across North America, that ultimately may not equate to significant business.

With the pandemic still in full swing, it should come as no surprise that it's highly unlikely for the Warner Bros. release to catch the total of TENET, the studio's other major movie to hit screens during the coronavirus crisis. Christoper Nolan's time-inverting thriller opened on 2800 screens at the beginning of September and sat atop the chart for five weekends, eventually finishing with $57.9 million domestic and $363 million worldwide. (The biggest movie of 2020 that had a "true" wide release was last January's BAD BOYS FOR LIFE, with $204 million domestic and a global total of $424 million.)

Again in second place was Universal's animated THE CROODS: A NEW AGE with $1.8 million. On its seventh weekend, the PG-rated DreamWorks sequel (which has also been available through premium VOD for three weeks) has a domestic total of $36.8 million and $127.8 million worldwide, on a  reported cost of $65 million.

In third place was the PG-13 drama NEWS OF THE WORLD with $1.24 million on its third weekend. The Tom Hanks Western from director Paul Greengrass has a ten-day domestic total of $7.1 million since it opened on Christmas Day.

The PG-13 action movie MONSTER HUNTER held onto fourth place with $1.1 million, bringing director Paul W.S. Anderson's $60 million videogame adaptation to a domestic total of $7.8 million and $17.4 million worldwide after four weekends.

In fifth place was director Deon Taylor's R-rated thriller FATALE with $670,000 over its fourth weekend. The Lionsgate movie (now also available on VOD) with Hilary Swank and Michael Ealy has a domestic total of $4.01 million.

On the bottom half of the list, R-rated black comedy PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN was in sixth place with $560,000 as it pushed to 1450 screens on its third weekend. The Sundance fave with Carey Mulligan as a vigilante has a domestic total of $2.7 million.

The Italian adaptation of classic fairy tale PINOCCHIO was in seventh place for a domestic total of $1.1 million since its Christmas release. In eighth place was the stalwart Robert De Niro family comedy THE WAR WITH GRANDPA, now 14 weekends in the Top 10. Supernatural thriller COME PLAY and Mexican import comedy HALF BROTHERS hung onto the bottom on a handful of screens.

Unlike the past several months, there weren't any surprise catalog titles appearing on the chart this week. We may still see a few during the next few weekends considering the lack of major releases on the horizon — right now the Liam Neeson action-drama THE MARKSMAN, the Denzel Washington serial-killer thriller THE LITTLE THINGS and Sony's musical update of CINDERELLA will be the primary options over the next month… assuming they stick to their dates.
