Wonder Woman 2 secures December 2019 release date

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Every and their mothers (not to mention their mother’s mothers) piled in to see WONDER WOMAN and watched in awe as Gal Gadot kicked every butt in sight. The movie has since made $390 million, making it the biggest domestic grosser of the summer. Naturally a sequel is coming fast, and now that Diana Prince (Gadot) has conquered summer, her next adventure will take her glass-ceiling shattering heroism into the Christmas season.

Warner Bros. has just announced the sequel will be released on December 13, 2019, taking one of the previously secured slots being saved for an unknown “WB event film.”  Going off the new STAR WARS trilogy’s two-year December release plan this would normally put this in contention with STAR WARS: EPISODE IX, but that film is coming seven months earlier on May 24. Now the WOMAN 2's only direct competition is the planned MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE film, but I’m sure Wonder Woman will have no problem showing the Master whose boss.

A sequel was quickly announced for WONDER WOMAN after it creamed opening weekend projections with a $100 million opening weekend, and thanks to stellar reviews the movie went on to have a better hold than two other massive comic book movies this summer – SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING ($117 million opening) and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 ($146 million opening). The movie has won the summer crown at the domestic box office ($780 million global) and is only a few million away from being the highest grossing superhero origin story of all time in the U.S.  The sequel has some big boots to fill.

There’s really no need to explain my love for the WONDER WOMAN film. The rest of the world seems to share that love, as fans around the world have rallied to the side of the Amazonian princess, solidifying her status as one of the most beloved superheroes ever. WOMAN will certainly go down as one of the best movies of the year, which is a massive triumph considering the critical beatdown of BATMAN V. SUPERMAN and SUICIDE SQUAD. I can only hope the sequel is just as good, and if so it will be the greatest Christmas gift of all.

WONDER WOMAN is still in theaters now.
