About three weeks ago we learned that Revolver Entertainment scored the rights to the UK horror flick MUM & DAD (check that shite out HERE). Today The Hollywood Reporter announced the film’s UK release schedule, and hinted at what’s to come for its US release.
In what seems to be an over-saturation of the market, Revolver plans on releasing MUM & DAD in theaters, on DVD, VOD, sell-through and rental on December 26th. Yes, as far as I can tell, they’re releasing the flick through each of the media outlets on the same day. Bizarre. But why? Revolver managing director had the following to say: Being the first U.K. distributor to release day-and-date across all platforms enables us to be the market leader in offering consumers the ultimate choice to watch the film in the way they choose, whether this is at home or on the big screen — or both.
I guess that makes sense. Personally, I’d rather watch anything in the theater–unfortunately, at $10 a pop, it’s more affordable to catch things on DVD, where a rental is a fraction of the cost. Should be interesting to see, given the choice, which platform will prevail.
So what about the US release? Looks like Revolver is eyeing Mother’s Day (May 10th) for a similiar release style. Of course, that will likely depend on how well their plan works in the UK. If it totally bombs, then I’m guessing the US will either see it in the theaters or on DVD first–but not at the same time.
