Mummy 3 a go-go

Like LL Cool J once said, “Don’t call it a comeback!”- which is exactly what Universal doesn’t want to call the newly announced second sequel to THE MUMMY. Except replace ‘comeback’ with ‘sequel’, and then call it a ‘re-imagining’ or some other happy horseshit. Wait… what?


According to TMZ, who got the exclusive scoop that Universal has greenlit THE MUMMY 3, Universal doesn’t want to call it a sequel because, these days, sequels are ‘out’. And by ‘sequels’ we really mean ‘numbers in the title’. It makes sense if you think about it, as most sequels these days are subtitled something and have dropped the number, and the few that have kept the number haven’t done too hot (they’re example is M:I:3, but I think that had more to do with Tom Cruise being a wacko than the number 3 in the title).


And in the case of THE MUMMY, it really wouldn’t make sense to call it PART 3, as PART 2 was called THE MUMMY RETURNS… as long as they don’t call it THE MUMMY FOREVER, I think we’ll be alright.


Brendan Fraser has signed on to reprise his role, and Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (creators of SMALLVILLE) have been hired to write it- because original writer/director Stephen Sommers will NOT be back for the third time around. It’s a shame, because he really made those movies fun, but maybe Sommers out of the picture will mean the third MUMMY will actually be scary.
