Today I received a package from an unknown benefactor. Opening it up, I found a smart phone and a message from a company called Phoenix Biogenic, which evidently deals in “consciousness transfer” – that is, they take your thoughts and memories from your old body and put them into a new one. The message also let me know I should keep my phone on tomorrow afternoon, as I’d be receiving further instructions…

Naturally, I instantly recognized that this was part of a marketing campaign, but was unsure what exactly it tied into. A little digging led me to the answer: the film is SELF/LESS, which comes from THE CELL director Tarsem Singh and stars Ben Kingsley and Ryan Reynolds. Below you’ll find a brief commercial for Phoenix Biogenic; I’m assuming tomorrow we’ll get an official trailer for the film itself.

Here’s the synopsis of the flick:

In this provocative psychological science fiction thriller, an extremely wealthy man (Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley) dying from cancer undergoes a radical medical procedure that transfers his consciousness into the body of a healthy young man (Ryan Reynolds). But all is not as it seems when he starts to uncover the mystery of the body’s origin and the organization that will kill to protect its cause.

This movie has flown completely under the radar, but obviously distributor Focus Features will be going to lengths to change that, starting today.

Also starring Michelle Dockery, Victor Garber, Natalie Martinez and Matthew Goode, SELF/LESS opens on July 31st. You can check out Phoenix Biogenic’s website right HERE.
