Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries will maintain chilling feel of the original

Last Updated on July 21, 2021

It was just yesterday that we passed along the news that Netflix is in the process of bringing UNSOLVED MYSTERIES back to our screens with a rebooted series. And today we have some new info on the upcoming revival including the fact that the first season will consist of 12 episodes. On top of that, Netflix put out a statement saying the new series will be maintaining "the chilling feeling viewers loved about the original."

Specifically, Netflix says:

This modern take on the classic series will maintain the chilling feeling viewers loved about the original, while also telling the stories through the lens of a premium Netflix documentary series. Each episode will focus on one mystery and once again will look to viewers to help aid investigators in closing the book on long outstanding cases.

Obviously, as a fan of the original series, I'm happy as hell that Netflix plans to maintain the chilling feeling of the original. But what I really want to know is if they will be able to snag the rights to the original theme song. I mean, they have to, right? What would the show be without its nightmare-inducing opening diddy? Let's hope we never have to find out.

The first season will

use re-enactments in a documentary format to profile real-life mysteries and unsolved crimes, lost love, cases involving missing persons and unexplained paranormal events. Each episode will focus on one mystery.  In the original series, actors played the victims, criminals, and witnesses but family members and police were regularly interviewed.

Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy and his company 21 Laps Entertainment are behind the reboot, working with the original show's production company Cosgrove-Meurer Productions. Unsolved Mysteries creators John Cosgrove and Terry Dunn Meurer are both involved; Cosgrove will be executive producing the show with Levy and Josh Barry while Dunn Meurer serves as showrunner with co-executive producer Robert Wise.

No premiere date has been announced.
