Director Don Coscarelli, the man who brought us PHANTASM and BUBBA HO-TEP, recently snagged the rights to David Wong’s SciFi/horror/comedy novel JOHN DIES AT THE END.
If you’re like me, you haven’t heard to JOHN DIES before, so here’s a brief synopsis (via Amazon.com): It’s a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and David, a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can’t.
Considering the tone of BUBBA HO-TEP, I can easily see Coscarelli tackling something of this nature. And it looks like I’m not the only one who feels this way. In an interview with Apex Sci-Fi and Horror Digest, Wong dropped this little bit of info.: The ink is barely dry on the contract, but… I have in fact just sold the film rights to JDatE, to Don Coscarelli (Bubba Ho-Tep, the Phantasm series). He contacted me late last year after he got hold of a copy of the paperback. And I think anybody who’s seen Bubba Ho-Tep can tell you JDatE is in good hands.
Nice! Though I haven’t read the book, it sounds like a trip and a half, and it’s already gathering quite the following. Now it’s time to go out and pick it up before the movie’s made…
