"This has been the most intense amount of action I've ever done," says Chris Hemsworth in a new behind-the-scenes clip for EXTRACTION that was recently posted to producers Joe and Anthony Russo's Instagram account.
Set to go off on Netflix beginning on April 24, EXTRACTION is a new action vehicle that revolves around Rake (Hemsworth), a fearless black market mercenary, who embarks on the most deadly extraction of his career when he's enlisted to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord.
This intense-looking thriller hails from Sam Hargrave, who in the past has contributed as both a stunt and fight coordinator for films like AVENGERS: ENDGAME, ATOMIC BLONDE, THE ACCOUNTANT and much more. What's potentially so great about this project is that Hargraves is now in the director's chair, and it looks as if he's willing to go to extremes to ensure that the action of EXTRACTION leaves viewers breathless. I'm talking about filming from atop the hood of a speeding car, and operating the camera from inside a live blast zone! Don't believe me? Joining Hemsworth for the action-heavy setup are stars David Harbour (Netflix's STRANGER THINGS, BLACK WIDOW), Golshifteh Farahani (BODY OF LIES, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES), and Derek Luke (ANTWONE FISHER, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER).
As the above video plays on, Hargraves and Hemsworth highlight a stretch of scenes that've all been stitched together to create a Oner. What's a Oner, you ask? It's a filming technique that's also known as a "long take" or a "continuous shot." The process involves specific camera movements and elaborate blocking techniques that mask the actual length of the shot. When seamlessly edited together, a series of shots can be transformed into what looks like one epic take. This method has been used in film projects like ATOMIC BLONDE, THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, and 1971, just to name a few. Personally, I'm a major fan of the Oner, and I can't wait to see how Hargraves implements this technique for some of EXTRACTION's more heightened action elements.
Thankfully, EXTRACTION lands on Netflix this April 24, so the party is almost set to begin. As your attorney I advise you to crank your sound systems, butter up the popcorn, and prepare yourselves for what looks like one hell of a good ride.
