New promo images showcase the final designs of the Guardians of the Galaxy

When Marvel unveiled the first official photo and synopsis for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY on New Year’s Eve, director James Gunn took to Facebook to claim that he did not know that Marvel would be releasing that as the official image as it was designed specifically for Comic Con. Gunn claimed that the design for Groot and Rocket Raccoon was different than that image. But, in some newly revealed promotional art posted by Comic Book Movie, you can see how close that image was to how Rocket and Groot will end up looking.

While these designs are appearing on cups and water bottles aimed at the younger Marvel fans, it seems likely that they will be close to the final big screen product. These high resolution shots give us a clear glimpse of Rocket’s gear and weaponry as well as the blades used by Gamora and Drax the Destroyer. Even Star Lord’s gun looks pretty awesome in these drawings and makes me very excited to see the live action version of these costumes.

We can also see the orb that Star Lord is holding is the object that Ronan is after and will likely be the central item to the movie’s story. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got a message from the studio that these images are not final either, but with less than a year until GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY hits screens, I would think these will be pretty damn close to the finished product.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, John C Reilly, Glenn Close, Lee Pace, and the voice talents of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. It opens on August 1, 2014.
