Rumors, rumors, everywhere and not one to believe. Well, not until we have some confirmation, at least. Still, rumors are the lifeblood of the internet and they provide the fodder for geek-fueled discussions. Take for instance the new rumor surrounding the casting for DEADPOOL 2. Since the first film broke records earlier this year, fans have been drooling for news about the casting of X-Men favorite Cable who was teased in the post-credits sequence. Names ranging from Ron Perlman to Stephen Lang have been bandied about, but neither has been confirmed as more than dream casting.
During the recent Meet the Movie Press, Jeff Sneider dropped this nugget about potential casting of both Cable and another mutant, Domino.
“People were talking about Cable from Deadpool 2. There's been a name floating around for Cable for months. Hasn't changed. Don't know if its changed. Didn't make any calls about this. This was just the name that has been out there for months. So take this with a gigantic grain of salt. The biggest grain of salt your tiny little brain can imagine. The name that is floating around for Cable right now is Emmy-winning actor Kyle Chandler. The name for Domino, who is said to be the scene-stealer of the movie, is Mackenzie Davis.”
If these names make you scratch your head a little, you are not alone. Neither name is as instantly recognizable to the fan community as Perlman or Lang, but both Kyle Chandler and Mackenzie Davis are solid actors. Chandler has a wide rang and has done stellar work on Friday Night Lights and Netflix's series Bloodline as well as a fun turn as a matinee idol in Peter Jackson's KING KONG. Davis is one of the highlights on AMC's underseen series Halt and Catch Fire and had a small role in Ridley Scott's THE MARTIAN. Both are the same type of casting that Marvel Studios typically excels at, making it nice to see that Fox could be finally following suit.
DEADPOOL was a massive hit for Fox who saw underwhelming returns for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Making sure that this film is as big of a hit is a major priority which means casting these new roles is crucial. The more I think about both actors, the more I like these choices as both are just recognizable enough to do a good job without detracting from the film itself. With DEADPOOL 2 slated to enter production early next year, I would expect to hear these roles formally announced sometime in the next couple of months.
DEADPOOL 2 is tentatively set to hit theaters in 2018.
