New Under the Dome details; new casting, Stephen King cameo, & more

Are you excited for the return of the hit CBS summer series "Under the Dome"? If so then you'll find a lot of new details here, including some new casting, a new image, some groovy new details, and word on a cameo by Stephen King himself! It sounds as if they're upping the ante for those unfortunate souls trapped "Under the Dome" and we're looking forward to the season 2 premiere on June 30!

First up, Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the CBS summer thriller has cast Brett Cullen (seen above) as Barbie’s father Don. Don runs a multi-national corporation and is described as powerful, smooth, and charming. Executive producer Neal Baer teased:

“Barbie is shocked to find himself face to face with his father in an unforgettable turn of events.”

Next up Deadline provided us with the following details: Though the second season will move past King’s book, storyline-wise, King is giving it his blessing by writing the first episode and making a cameo. In a trailer for that first, King-written episode, The Dome becomes magnetic, sending all the town’s metal appliances, vehicles, etc. careening across the landscape. This doesn’t end well for at least one of the show’s characters. You can check out the image of the carnage below.

Baer reveals…

“What I love about Stephen King’s way of seeing the world is that the ordinary becomes extraordinary. The barbeque is only the beginning. In that episode, things we trust become fearful.”

“This is about ecological disaster pending — that magnetism has caused many things to happen…biblical problems of pestilence and bloody rain, because characters haven’t been the stewards they should be, of protecting the land and each other. What is the message The Dome is trying to teach us?”

Baer also shared that King has read every script for the second season, stating…

“He has great ideas. I just love the fact that refrigerators and stoves become our enemies…[King] has this wonderment quality that is infectious.”

Refrigerators and stoves becoming our enemies? Hmmm…shades of MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE, perhaps?

And finally, Enstars is reporting that the second season is set to explore science vs. faith, thanks in part to Rebecca (Karla Crome), a new character who is a science teacher. Rebecca takes on a science-based approach to the mysterious dome while Julia (Rachelle Lefevre) is more faith-based. Big Jim (Dean Norris) finds himself caught in the middle of both approaches.

Baer also revealed that even though the series was slated to be an "event" type of show, it could last well beyond that, stating…

"We're way past the book. The book is about the first week and we're already two weeks in. This season will be going two more weeks. If we lasted 15 years, that would only be a year under the dome. It's certainly possible to keep going. We have so many stories to tell."

"Under the Dome" stars Mike Vogel (Barbie), Colin Ford (Joe), Alexander Koch (Junior), Rachelle Lefevre (Julia), Natalie Martinez (Linda), Dean Norris (Big Jim), Mackenzie Lintz (Norrie), and Britt Robertson (Angie). But no telling how long any of them will stick around as it's already been announced that two "favorites" will be killed off in the show's Stephen King-penned Season 2 premiere.

The new season's newcomers include Sherry Stringfield, Eddie Cahill, Grace Victoria Cox, Karla Crome, Dwayne Boyd, and Dwight Yoakam.
