A Nightmare on Elm Street: Blumhouse would get Robert Englund to play Freddy again

It’s only a matter of time before another Nightmare on Elm Street movie is made. The rights to the franchise are now in the hands of Wes Craven’s estate, and they’ve been taking pitches for almost three years now. Elijah Wood’s company SpectreVision has made it clear they want a chance to make an Elm Street movie, Scream (2022) co-writer Guy Busick has said he wants to write one. And, of course, Blumhouse Productions would be interested in going to Elm Street. During an interview with Screen Rant, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum even confidently stated that he would get Robert Englund to play Freddy Krueger again, even though Englund said he has retired from the role.

Blum, who got Jamie Lee Curtis to return for a new trilogy of Halloween sequels and got Ellen Burstyn to return for an upcoming sequel to The Exorcist, told Screen Rant:

I could make him come back. I can get anyone back. Ellen Burstyn was 87, and I got her back in The Exorcist. Yeah, (Robert Englund is) 75 — he’s young!”

Nineteen years have gone by since the last time Englund played Freddy on the big screen, in Freddy vs. Jason. Since then, he has only reprised the character on an episode of the sitcom The Goldbergs (and for some convention appearances). It’s been twelve years since Platinum Dunes poorly-received attempt to reboot the franchise with Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy. Here’s hoping that Craven’s estate will decide on a way forward for the Elm Street property very soon – and that when they do, it will be with Blumhouse or SpectreVision involved, or with some other production company that wants to get Englund to play Freddy one more time.

That’s what I would like to see, anyway. Would you like to see Englund play Freddy in another Elm Street movie? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
