It looks like M. Night Shyamalan is looking to change things up a bit. With his last two films, LADY IN THE WATER and THE HAPPENING performing less than stellar critically and financially, the Oscar-nominated writer/director is now taking some pressure off his creativity by concentrating solely on producing. Variety reports that he has teamed up with Media Rights Capital to form the Night Chronicles, a financing/production partnership intended to generate one thriller per year for three years.
And yes, M. Night will not be writing the scripts or directing any of the three flicks. He will, however, be creating the stories and ideas for the films and selecting the writers and directors. Media Rights Capital will be handling all the financing. So this sounds like a pretty sweet gig: He gets to come up with all these fun movie ideas and then pick who he wants to make ‘em.
Tory Metzger, head of MRC Films, seems quite pleased with the Night acquisition. “These films will be based on ideas in keeping with what has made Night so successful, and has made him unique to his time,” she said. This is the first time Mr. Shyamalan will be producing a movie that he neither wrote nor directed. I honestly hope it works out for the guy. Though I wasn’t a fan of LADY IN THE WATER and have yet to see THE HAPPENING, I still feel he has a knack for crafting different and well-thought-out big screen stories. UNBREAKABLE is still one of my all-time faves. I also heard from joblo’s own Mike Sampson that he’s a pretty cool guy in general.
