I know of Troy Nixey mainly for his work as an incomparable illustrator working with such names as Neil Gaiman and Mike Mignola. But if it wasn’t for our buddy The Arrow, I wouldn’t know of his directing debut with a remake of DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK. You’d have to ask Arrow if it’s a good thing, I can’t say I’m big on the horror genre.
Nixey’s sophomore effort is already lined up thanks to Phoenix Pictures, who bought his pitch for the G-rated fantasy SIMPLE MACHINES. Story, which the director links to his love of classic Chaplin films, sees a recluse inventor trying to stop his creations from falling in the nefarious hands of an evil corporation. Insert Microsoft jokes at will.
Nixey, whose graphic novel TROUT is also being adapted for Phoenix, is still currently hard at work on DARK in Australia, so we probably won’t be treated to it this Halloween. Safe bet for 2010 against the next inevitable SAW, though.
