Jason Reitman has directed some very solid flicks early on in his career (UP IN THE AIR, THANK YOU FOR SMOKING), and while his last feature, LABOR DAY, received a lukewarm response, the man shows no signs of slowing down. Premiering at TIFF this year will be MEN, WOMEN & CHILRDEN, and it appears that a trailer for the flick has just hit.
The synopsis is as follows:
MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN follows the story of a group of high school teenagers and their parents as they attempt to navigate the many ways the internet has changed their relationships, their communication, their self-image, and their love lives. The film attempts to stare down social issues such as video game culture, anorexia, infidelity, fame hunting, and the proliferation of illicit material on the internet. As each character and each relationship is tested, we are shown the variety of roads people choose – some tragic, some hopeful – as it becomes clear that no one is immune to this enormous social change that has come through our phones, our tablets, and our computers.
While the trailer was stylistically put together with no spoken dialogue, it does make me wonder if the film will go for stretches without anything said (out loud). In the wrong hands, one could see how this study on technology and it’s non-confrontational grip could be a little heavy handed. Reitman strikes me as a smart director so I look forward to seeing what he has to say.
MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN will be released sometime in 2014.
