According to a press release by Fox, the 6/6/06 gimmick for John Moore’s THE OMEN have paid off in a big way.
The movie is estimated to have grossed some $12.46 million at 2,660 screens on Tuesday (a per-screen average of about $4,686), compared to the distant $4 million total that THE BREAK-UP garnered. While not official, the remake is pretty darn close to having the best Tuesday figure ever, currently held by MEET THE FOCKERS ($12.6 million), followed by THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING ($12.47 million). As for opening on a Tuesday, THE OMEN beats out the previous record set by INDEPENDENCE DAY which grossed $11.1 million back in 1996.
This either says that John Q. Public bought into the whole remake idea again, or the fact that people don’t have enough to do on a Tuesday night. If Fox wanted a cheaper way to get $12 million in a day, they could’ve put the original’s DVD in the booth and played that instead. I mean, it was basically the same film, both figuratively and literally. But no one listens to us, which is why these films keep getting made.
