One Night in Miami trailer brings four legends together to fight the power

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Amazon Studios has unveiled its official ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI trailer, teasing the acclaimed directorial debut of Regina King. Based on the award-winning play of the same name, the film assembles four legends – Muhammed Ali (Eli Goree), Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.), and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge) – for a spirited discussion about how each one of them has made a lasting impact on the Black community.

Inspired by true events, the trailer for One Night in Miami … has got soul, suspense, and sea-changing messages from icons that helped shape generations to come. It's nigh impossible not to feel the power emanating from today's footage and I'll be damned if this isn't being added to my must-watch list in the months to come.

Here’s the official synopsis for One Night in Miami …:

On one incredible night in 1964, four icons of sports, music, and activism gathered to celebrate one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. When underdog Cassius Clay, soon to be called Muhammad Ali, (Eli Goree), defeats heavyweight champion Sonny Liston at the Miami Convention Hall, Clay memorialized the event with three of his friends: Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge). Based on the award-winning play of the same name, and directed by Regina King, One Night In Miami… is a fictional account inspired by the historic night these four formidable figures spent together. It looks at the struggles these men faced and the vital role they each played in the civil rights movement and cultural upheaval of the 1960s. More than 40 years later, their conversations on racial injustice, religion, and personal responsibility still resonate.

Folks I've spoken to who saw the film in September during the Toronto International Film Festival had plenty of positive things to say about King's upcoming film, including our own Chris Bumbray. In his review, Chris refers to King as a powerhouse director and praises the film as an Oscar-worthy experience. Speaking of which, Regina King's One Night in Miami … will play in select theaters on December 25th before landing on Amazon Prime Video on January 15.
