If you got to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 over this past weekend, you might have gotten to see the new Oppenheimer trailer. The forever supporter of the cinema-going experience, Christopher Nolan, will usually unveil sneak peeks of his films at screenings before they show up online. Last night, the newest trailer for the world-changing event film dropped courtesy of Universal and builds the tension to a new world order as the titular character dedicates his life to one of the greatest regrets the world has ever known.
The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. It features an all-star cast that stars Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey, Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett and Kenneth Branagh. The cast also includes Dane DeHaan (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Dylan Arnold (Halloween franchise), David Krumholtz (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises).
The trailer gives more insight into the plot as J. Robert Oppenheimer pleads with General Groves about how important it is to conceive such a project. A little town is established for the work of the scientists, and as Oppenheimer breaks through with his work, he finds himself the to be in the center of attention of the government, the press, and pretty much the rest of the world as he becomes “the bringer of death.” We finally get glimpses of the impressive supporting cast with clips of Robert Downey Jr., Kenneth Branagh, Florence Pugh, and a blink and you’ll miss it appearance of Jack Quaid.
Christopher Nolan will once again produce for his company, Syncopy, with his wife, Emma Thomas, and producing partner, Charles Roven. Oppenheimer has been filmed in a combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography, including, for the first time ever, sections in IMAX® black and white analog photography. Nolan works once again with cinematographer, Hoyte Van Hoytema, who gives us such breathtaking images as he did with Tenet. Nolan also once again collaborates with composer Ludwig Göransson after Tenet, after a long partnership with Hans Zimmer, for the new booming score.
Coming off of the notorious mind-bending, high-concept, sci-fi action film with Tenet, it’s really nice to see Nolan keep things simpler here with a straightforward drama, which is rare for a summer blockbuster nowadays.
